Global climate change is a change caused by human activities in addition to the natural variability of climate experienced throughout the earth's long geological history. In parallel, in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), climate change is defined as "a change in climate as a result of human activities that directly or indirectly degrade the composition of the global atmosphere, in addition to natural climate change observed over a comparable period of time". The burning of fossil and biomass fuels is the largest source of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Cement production releases carbon dioxide, agriculture and solid waste landfills release methane gas. Fertilizer use and nylon production, nitrous oxide and refrigerators and air conditioners increase fluorinated greenhouse gas emissions. Land use changes also significantly affect the climate system. Land clearing for agricultural use increases the amount of dark surface, and as a result, incoming solar radiation is absorbed rather than reflected. Land clearing also means less trees and plants that capture and store carbon dioxide, due to the destruction of forests. Desertification can have an effect that slows down global warming by reducing the energy coming from the sun to the Earth's surface due to an increase in the amount of dust passing into the atmosphere. Urbanization leads to the formation of urban heat islands, that is, areas that are warmer in cities than their surroundings.
