          WORLD WATER DAY

Water is a source of life. For example, water is needed in all functions that take place in the human body (such as digestion, circulation, breathing, emptying, reproduction). Therefore, the presence of liquid water is being investigated in the search for life outside the Earth.

From space, our planet appears as a blue sphere. That's because about 71% of its surface is covered with water.  Liquid water is the most important substance that separates the Earth from other planets in the solar system. Geological evidence suggests that liquid water has existed on Earth for 3.8 billion years.

Usually there are large differences between the melting and boiling temperatures of a substance. However, water can be found in solid, liquid and gaseering at a relatively narrow temperature range.

And is the water the source of life as much as we think on our planet?

There's water on Earth, equal to the volume of a sphere with a diameter of 1,386,000,000 sq km, or approximately 1,385 kilometers. 96.5% of the earth's water is in the oceans and the rest is in the atmosphere, oceans, lakes, rivers and glaciers in the form of water vapor. But fresh water is needed for the life of living things. Fresh water accounts for only 2.5% (10,633,450 sq km) of water on Earth.

Globally, water consumption is increasing day by day.  In addition, climate change due to global warming, the frequency of extreme weather events and contamination of clean water sources are causing the gradual depletion of clean freshwater resources.

A third of the world's countries do not have access to water or are very limited. 18% of the world's population does not have access to clean water. The reduction of water resources leads to negative effects such as migration and epidemics.

World Water Day

The United Nations and its member countries have dedicated this day to rewarding concrete work on water resources in the world and implementing United Nations recommendations. Every year, a different organization of the United Nations working in the field of water supports and coordinates the international events to be held on World Water Day. Since its establishment in 2003, UN-Water has assumed the responsibility of determining the UN agency that will lead the World Water Day events, the topic of the event and the messages to be given.

Apart from the member states of the United Nations, some non-governmental organizations supporting potable water resources and aquatic life also consider World Water Day as a good opportunity to draw attention to the priority water problems of our time. For example, the World Water Council has been reaching thousands of participants for a week with the World Water Forum, which it has organized every three years since 1997. Among the issues that the participating organizations and non-governmental organizations draw attention are issues such as “one billion people who do not have the chance to reach clean drinking water” and “the place of gender in accessing water in the family”.

Water Day

"World Water Day", which was first proposed in 1993 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, aimed to draw attention to the ever-growing clean water problem of the world's countries, and to take concrete steps to protect and increase potable water resources.
World Water Day is celebrated on March 22 every year to emphasize the increasing water crisis and the situation that threatens the sustainability of social and economic development.

World Water Day

22 March “World Water Day” reminds the importance of good water in human life, and emphasizes that “GOOD WATER” is decreasing day by day as a result of environmental pollution and population growth. Declaring 22 March as “World Water Day” was decided at the United Nations (UN) Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. WATER, and especially HEALTHY WATER, is an indispensable object for human life, and it is even an “indispensable” substance that has no alternative for human beings. Is it possible to make the world’s waters healthy and improve “WATER for the Future” by commemorating and thinking about WATER once a year?

For us, the readers and writers of the Journal of Water and Environment, who recognize the importance of WATER for people, it is obviously insufficient to think about and commemorate WATER once a year. However, if we take advantage of March 22 and spread our WATER information around us, then in a few years, the purpose of WORLD WATER DAY may reach a conclusion with a geometric growth rate.
