Ormanlar dünyanın en önemli oksijen kaynaklarındandır.   Orman belirli yükseklikteki ve büyüklükteki çeşitli ağaçlardan, çalılardan, otsu bitkilerden, mantarlardan, mikroorganizmalardan ve hayvanlardan oluşan, doğal bir kara ekosistemidir.   Yeryüzü için birçok faydası bulunan yemyeşil ormanlar çok sayıda ağaç barındırır. Her bir ağaçtaki yaprak sayısı düşünüldüğünde ağaçların neden çok büyük bir oksijen kaynağı olduğu anlaşılabilir.   Yeryüzünde karaların %31’i ormanlarla kaplıdır.
